Man on probation arrested for attempted murder after police chase in Rankin – WPXI

RANKIN, Pennsylvania – A man paroled for attempted murder was arrested in Rankin after a police chase.

According to a criminal complaint, 32-year-old Bernard Carter was observed driving 75 mph on Overland Avenue in Duquesne at 1:49 a.m. Sunday. Officers said the speed limit on that road is 35 mph. Officers said he was weaving back and forth between the right and left lanes.

Police said they tried to pull him over, but he sped off when the traffic stop began. Then a chase began. According to court documents, the pursuit took place on State Route 837 and Carter swerved and passed vehicles in the oncoming lane. They believe he reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.

Eventually, police decided to stop pursuing the vehicle and continued driving at a normal speed. As they continued driving, they searched for any accidents caused by Carter, who they believed was still fleeing. During their search, they came to the intersection of S Braddock Avenue and Kenmawr Avenue in Rankin. There they found Carter’s Jeep, which they had been pursuing. Police said they saw him running away on foot near the vehicle.

Police say they asked Carter to stop running, but he told them, “No.”

When police caught up with Carter, a scuffle reportedly broke out, resulting in multiple tasers being used and several officers being injured.

According to court documents, Carter managed to subdue four police officers until a fifth officer arrived to complete the arrest.

Four officers reported injuries.

Carter is being held in the Allegheny County Jail and has been denied bail. Police say he is free on parole for attempted murder.
