Family of Orlando father searches for hit-and-run driver who killed him: ‘I won’t stop’

The family of an Orlando father who died in a hit-and-run accident is still searching for the driver.

The family of Jonnier Agosto Cortes is determined to find out who killed their loved one, who died in a hit-and-run accident in May. According to Florida Highway Patrol police, he was walking on the sidewalk on Curry Ford Road near Colton Drive when a driver lost control of his vehicle and struck him.

Troopers said that after hitting Cortes, the driver fled the scene and went to a Walgreens store down the street to inspect the damage to his vehicle.

The family is leaving no stone unturned in the search for the driver and on Father’s Day they distributed flyers near the crash site with information about the accident. They also said that anyone with information can come forward to find a witness or anything else that can help in the search for the driver.

“A month has passed and we have nothing,” Cortes’ aunt said. “You forget that you killed my nephew and you go up here, check your car, but you don’t help my nephew? I’m going to stay here, day after day, year after year, and I’m going to find him. I’m not going to stop.”

Cortes was 28 years old and the father of a one-year-old son. On Father’s Day, his family brought balloons to his memorial.

“We are trying to deal with the situation as best we can. It is definitely hard to see other fathers with their children. My baby does not have his daddy with him,” said Cortes’ wife, Zuleika Figuereo.

Using traffic cameras, officers were able to capture the vehicle’s license plate number. They went to the registered owner’s home, where they found the car. They are now trying to determine who was driving the car at the time of the accident. The family is hoping anyone with information will come forward to help with the investigation.

“If he could drive to Walgreens and there were cameras and people buying things, then someone had to have seen more than we were told,” Figuereo said.
