One dead in domestic disturbance in Adams County

ADAMS COUNTY, Mississippi (WJTV) – A man died on Father’s Day following a domestic dispute in Adams County.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said 911 received a call from a woman shortly after midnight on June 16. The woman was crying and screaming for help, repeating an address on Carmel Church Road before the line went dead.

Adams County officials were dispatched to the area. At about the same time, E911 Dispatch received calls from Randrell Jones regarding the incident. According to Patten, Randrell told dispatch that an altercation had occurred between his mother, Tawana Jones, and his stepfather, Calvin Carter.

Randrell said Calvin had a gun and kidnapped his mother from a house. He said he tried to follow them on Highway 61 South. Randrell later told dispatch Calvin led Tawana down Shieldsboro Road. Moments later, several gunshots were heard.

The sheriff said Randrell was arrested and Calvin and Tawana were taken to Merit Health Natchez for treatment.

During their investigation, officers determined that Calvin had driven to the house on Carmel Church Road where his estranged wife was spending the night. They said Calvin parked his vehicle at a locked gate and climbed over the fence of the property. A short time later, Calvin was seen returning to the vehicle with Tawana.

Witnesses said Calvin entered the house and attacked Tawana. They said he also destroyed the interior of the house.

Patten said Calvin succumbed to his injuries at Merit Health Natchez. He said Tawana suffered cuts, bruises and broken bones in the altercation. She was released from the hospital.

Patten said there had been no arrests yet, but the investigation was ongoing.
