Weather forecast: First warning: Thunderstorms with heavy rain likely on Monday

Here is your Sunday evening forecast for June 16, 2024 from the Minnesota Weather Service and meteorologist Matt Serwe.

Monday is a day with the first weather forecast for the Twin Cities metropolitan area to central Minnesota. Several waves of storms could bring heavy rain and flooding as well as severe weather.

A flood warning is in effect from Monday through Monday night for the Twin Cities metropolitan area and central Minnesota.

I will say this now: This week will be very stormy in Minnesota, with several inches of rain possible. If you live in a river community, you should have a plan in place in case river levels rise quickly. If you are going to a cabin or camp this week and will be near a river, you should have a way to get severe weather information and know the quickest route to higher ground.

A cold front will move across the state tonight and will settle near the Minnesota-Iowa border. After midnight, storms will spread from southern Minnesota to the Twin Cities. These storms will likely linger into the morning rush hour on Monday. After a small break from late morning to midday, more storms will develop as the front slowly moves north during the afternoon and evening. The evening rush hour will likely bring storms with heavy rain. These storms will gradually move into central and northern Minnesota Monday night into Tuesday morning. 1 to 3 inches of rain is likely across most of Minnesota Sunday night into Monday night, with locally higher amounts possible as storms move over the same areas.

Another round of widespread storms is likely Tuesday evening into Tuesday night. This could be a additionally 1 to 3 inches of rain across the state, with locally higher amounts. Tuesday’s storms also have a higher chance of producing large hail and damaging winds in central and northern Minnesota. Wednesday is a drying day before more rain returns Thursday. Storms are also possible Friday and Saturday, bringing even more heavy rain to Minnesota.
