Rocket on luck in potential trade for Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell?

All-Star Donovan Mitchell could be on the move this offseason. The veteran guard is eligible to sign a long-term deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers in July. However, if he chooses not to sign, the Cavaliers could enter into trade talks. The Houston Rockets could become real contenders. A source told Inside the Rockets that coach Ime Udoka “loves” Mitchell.

The Cavaliers are entering their most important offseason since the departure of Lebron James in 2019. However, Cleveland wants to build its roster around Mitchell, which could lead him to stay with the franchise.

According to Marc Stein, the Cavaliers made Jarrett Allen an untouchable player in trade talks because Mitchell wants to continue playing with him.

One reason I’ve heard for the Cavaliers’ reluctance to trade Jarrett Allen despite lingering questions about Allen’s place in the same frontcourt alongside new Evan Mobley: Donovan Mitchell is often described as a fan of ‘Allen who doesn’t want to lose him as a teammate’ – by Marc Stein.

If Mitchell were to force their hand, the Rockets would be in a great position to make a marquee offer to the Cavaliers. Houston has several young players who could appeal to Cleveland, and after landing the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Rockets could package up the top selection in a potential trade.
