Grant Holmes promoted to Atlanta Braves | News

The wait is finally over for Grant Holmes.

He’s on the show now.

The former Conway High School star was promoted to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday after spending nearly 10 years in the minor leagues. Holmes is the first Horry County High School alumnus to be called up to the major leagues.

Holmes was 3-2 with a 2.63 ERA for the Gwinnett Stripers, the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, when he got the call.

The Braves offered left-hander Ray Kerr to Gwinnett to clear the way for Holmes to join the big league roster. Holmes replaces right-hander Huascar Ynoa on the 40-man roster. Ynoa was recalled and placed on the 60-day injured list.

Holmes, 28, will wear number 66 for the Braves.

It’s been a long odyssey for Holmes, who began his professional career as a starter. He was 2-3 with a 3.72 ERA for two of the Dodgers’ Rookie League affiliates. He was later converted to a reliever and was initially the Stripers’ closer when he joined the team in 2023. Holmes then moved to the starting role with the Stripers in recent weeks. He will be in the Braves bullpen.

Holmes was 7-3 with a 3.54 ERA and 13 saves in 2023. He struck out 74 in 61 innings.

In 2014, Holmes was the first round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 22nd overall pick.

In his first full season in Class A baseball in 2015, Holmes was 6-4 with a 3.14 ERA and 117 strikeouts in 103 1/3 innings.

Holmes was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2016 as the centerpiece of the trade that sent Rick Hill and Josh Reddick to the Dodgers. He was 11-7 with a 4.63 ERA for two Advanced-A teams.

In 2017, the A’s promoted Holmes to Double-A Midland (Texas), where he was 11-12 with a 4.63 ERA. Holmes pitched a career-high 148 1/3 innings, striking out 150.

Holmes missed most of the 2018 season due to injury, making only two appearances for Advanced-A Stockton Ports.

In 2019, Holmes was 6-5 with a 3.23 ERA for Midland before being promoted to the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators. Holmes made one appearance for the Aviators, allowing one run with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
