On their way home to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, 4 brick kiln workers died in an accident in Ghaziabad | Delhi News

Four workers of a brick kiln were killed and 18 others injured when a truck rammed the car they were travelling in on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Ghaziabad police said.

The canter, a medium-sized truck, was carrying 37 labourers, including some children, from Sonipat in Haryana to Shahjahanpur and Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh. Police said they were on their way home to celebrate Bakrid.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 1.15 am. The Canter was parked on the side of the road and some men got out to relieve themselves. Then a truck from Baghpat collided with the Canter. The vehicle overturned and four people died on the spot.

The dead were identified as 40-year-old Maya Devi, 60-year-old Najuman, their 20-year-old son Irshad and 21-year-old Shabina. They lived in Kumrua village in Hardoi, UP.

“The truck was carrying 37 labourers working in a brick kiln in Gannaur, Sonipat. The 18 injured were immediately rushed to the district hospital by the local police for treatment. From there, nine were referred to GTB Hospital in New Delhi for better treatment,” said Veerendra Kumar, deputy DCP, Ghaziabad.

Officials said that no FIR has been filed in the case, but the accused driver has been arrested. “The victims have not filed a complaint yet. The accused driver, Ritesh Kumar, is a resident of Bihar. His truck has also been seized. Further legal action will be taken,” said an officer from Muradnagar police station.
