Middletown YMCA reopens after steam room incident

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The Newport County YMCA will reopen Sunday after an incident in the steam room Saturday morning that required an evacuation of the building.

According to a social media post, the women’s locker rooms, ground floor restrooms and spin room will remain closed.

“The restoration company will be working in these areas over the next few days to assess the water damage,” Mike Miller of the Newport County YMCA said in the post.

“Due to the closure of the ladies’ changing room, we ask that you please use the universal changing room. Both steam rooms will remain closed until further notice as we investigate the cause of the incident.”

Police were called to the building around 8 a.m. after excessive steam came out of one of the rooms when the door was opened, triggering the sprinkler system.

Miller said all members who were in the area at the time were OK and thanked first responders who came to help.
