The 55-year-old man disappeared from his hotel on the Greek island of Mithraki last Tuesday and was found dead on Sunday, Corfu television news reported.

His death is the third in the country in recent weeks.

A 74-year-old man from the Netherlands was found dead on the island of Samos on Saturday after walking alone in the southwest of the island. His body was eventually found in a ravine.

British TV doctor Michael Mosley was found dead on the island of Symi a week ago. Mosley apparently fell down a steep slope, the mayor of Symi, Lefteris Papakalodoukas, told Sky News.

Several tourists are currently missing in the country.

Another American tourist, 59-year-old Albert Calibet, is missing on the island of Amorgos after disappearing following a hike.

ABC News reported that several of Calibet’s family members and friends traveled to Greece to search for the retired police officer, who is originally from Los Angeles County.

And according to local media reports, the search for two missing French tourists is ongoing on the Greek island of Sikinos.

Volunteers, firefighters and a police team from the nearby island of Ios will take part in the rescue mission. The two women were visiting Greece from France and are 73 and 64 years old.

News channel Cyclades24 reported that the women had stayed in different hotels but were allegedly connected to each other.

Authorities warn of heat danger

Amorgos Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Popi Despotidi, told iefimerida.gr that Calibet’s disappearance may have been influenced by the heat.

“It is unbearably hot on the island at the moment. We are considering all options,” said Despotidi.

As Greece is hit by an unusually early heatwave with temperatures reaching 44.5°C in the city of Chania in northwest Crete, an urgent warning has been issued to visitors.

Greece has long suffered from extreme heat, but never before has it been recorded so early in the summer season, according to the national meteorological service EMY.

The Acropolis in Athens and several other tourist attractions were forced to close this week after reports emerged that people had fainted while waiting in line in sweltering temperatures.

Heatwave in Cyprus

Meanwhile, a health official in Cyprus said on Sunday that a second elderly person had died of heatstroke after a week-long heatwave reportedly exceeded record temperatures for the month of June.

An 84-year-old woman died a day after being admitted to hospital on Friday, said Charalambos Charilaou, spokesman for the state health authority. He said three other elderly patients were in serious condition.

Temperatures on the island have risen sharply throughout the week, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
