German police said officers in the northern city of Hamburg shot and injured a man who threatened them with an axe and a firebomb, hours before a Euro 2024 football championship match was scheduled to take place there.

BERLIN – German police said Sunday they shot and wounded a man in the northern city of Hamburg who threatened them with an axe and a firebomb, hours before the city was set to host a Euro 2024 soccer championship match.

The man is receiving medical treatment, the Hamburg police said in a post on X, without giving further details.

The incident occurred in downtown St. Pauli, where, according to German media, thousands of fans crowded ahead of the match between the Netherlands and Poland on Sunday.
