Hot and humid with air quality warning for Father’s Day

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Father’s Day will be hot and muggy with highs between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index of 100 to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Sunday will be mostly sunny, but there will be a few clouds in the afternoon and evening. A scattered shower or thunderstorm also can’t be ruled out Sunday afternoon and evening, but most of us will stay dry.

There is an air quality warning in place on Sunday because our air quality is forecast to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. This means that the air quality is acceptable for most people, but there may be a risk for those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution, such as asthmatics or people with other lung conditions. If you are in this category, just take it easy on Sunday, avoid strenuous outdoor activity and watch for coughing and shortness of breath.

The night into Sunday will be mostly clear and warm, with minimum temperatures only reaching around 24 degrees Celsius.

Monday will start mostly sunny but will become partly cloudy. There will be a chance of rain again in the afternoon and evening, but not everyone will see the rain. Monday will be hot again with highs between 35 and 35 degrees and a heat index around 38 degrees.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we will see more clouds than sunshine, which will help keep our temperatures from dropping by just a few degrees. Highs will be just under 35 degrees, with the heat index just under 35 degrees. Isolated showers or thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, especially on Tuesday, but widespread showers are not expected yet.

Towards the end of the week we will be mostly sunny again, and temperatures will rise above 35 degrees on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I don’t think the humidity will be as high as on Sunday and Monday, but it will still feel a few degrees hotter than it actually is.

More Americans die from heat each year than any other type of weather, so take the proper precautions this week. Wear light, light-colored clothing, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, stay out in the sun too much, and drink plenty of water even if you’re not thirsty.
