Investigations into last week’s tornadoes continue

Investigations are ongoing after several tornadoes ripped through parts of southwestern and south-central Manitoba on Wednesday.

Environment Canada has received reports of tornadoes near Rivers and Swan Lake and has advised that at this time there is insufficient evidence to confirm that tornadoes occurred in these areas.

However, meteorologists and investigators from the Northern Tornadoes Project continue to investigate these events.

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), founded at Western University in 2017, aims to better detect tornado occurrences across Canada, improve the understanding and prediction of severe and extreme weather, mitigate damage to people and property, and study future impacts of climate change. Western University is also collaborating with the University of Manitoba, Pelmorex’s The Weather Network, Instant Weather and CatIQ, and is working closely with Environment and Climate Change Canada and several Canadian and international universities on this project.

The weather agency also pointed out that it is very likely that there were additional tornadoes between Rivers and Swan Lake, particularly near St. Alphonse, Cypress River, Mariapolis, Bruxelles and near La Riviere.

Investigators are actively seeking images of the suspected tornadoes and the damage they may have caused. If you have images or additional information, you can call us at 1-800-239-0484 or email [email protected].
