Royal Oak man charged with destroying police iPad during court hearing

A Royal Oak man destroyed the police iPad he was using for his remote appearances before a judge during his arraignment on a misdemeanor in a second domestic violence case and is now charged with a felony.

Due to the damage, the hearing had to be terminated prematurely.

Police said 45-year-old Josef Cadwell, suspected of domestic violence, was in a jail cell for a hearing on June 4 when he appeared before Royal Oak 44th District Judge Andrew Kowalkowski.

“The suspect apparently became angry because he disagreed with the judge’s decision and began smashing the iPad in a restroom in the cell,” said Royal Oak Police Sergeant Nathan Heppner.

After smashing the device, the suspect began to take the parts apart and remove the battery, according to police.

“Then the iPad started smoking,” Heppner said.

Cadwell’s bail for the second domestic violence charge is $25,000 cash, according to Oakland County Jail records, and his bail for destroying the iPad is $15,000, 10 percent.

Intentionally destroying police or fire equipment is a crime in Michigan, punishable by a fine of up to $15,000 or three times the value of the property destroyed (whichever is greater).

According to police, the destroyed iPad is worth about $1,000.

If Cadwell posts bail, he will have to wear an electronic bracelet.
