Correctional officer arrested for alleged assault on girlfriend in Newark; resigns during internal investigation

Authorities say a man who was a first-year employee of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend.

Newark Village police arrested 36-year-old Scott A. Smith Jr. on Saturday for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

The incident occurred at 3:15 p.m. on Hillside Drive. Smith was charged with third-degree assault and taken to the Wayne County Jail. He was released to appear in Newark Village Court. An order of protection was issued for the victim.

At the time, Smith was in his first year with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. He was suspended with pay but later resigned during the internal investigation. Smith is no longer with the Sheriff’s Office.
