Israel’s war on Gaza live: Israel blows up houses in Rafah after 8 soldiers are killed | News on the Israel-Palestine conflict

Gideon Levy, author and columnist for the Israeli daily Haaretz, said the ambush in Rafah, in which eight Israeli soldiers were killed, would raise further questions in Israeli society about the war in Gaza, which is fast turning into an unwinnable “endless war”.

“This is not unprecedented, but it is a very significant number, although we must not forget that 38 people were killed in Gaza today,” Levy told Al Jazeera.

“But it is different, because eight soldiers is a big, heavy price for Israeli society, especially when you consider the total number and the general atmosphere in which we hear about soldier losses day after day, almost every day,” Levy said.

“And more and more people in Israel are asking: ‘Why?’ And ‘Until when?'”

“This war could be an endless war. A war of attrition. No matter how strong the Israeli army is, Hamas forces can always kill and sabotage, and then there will be retaliation. It leads nowhere and is endless,” he said.

“They will never achieve this ridiculous ‘total victory’ that Prime Minister Netanyahu talks about, and there will be no defeat here. It will go on and on until Israel and Hamas – especially Israel – realize that it is going nowhere and must stop at all costs.”
