DU student sexually harassed; witness beaten up

The University of Dhaka (DU) is investigating allegations of sexual harassment and assault against two female students.

Mehdi Hasan, a fisheries student and general secretary of Badhan, sexually assaulted her near Bangla Academy and tried to escape, one of the victims claimed in her complaint.

Atiq, a former deputy secretary of the central committee of Chhatra League and a resident of Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall studying botany in the academic year 2015-16, beat up her, the victim of the physical attack alleged in her complaint.

Both Mehdi and Atiq were apprehended with the help of other students nearby and handed over to the university’s security team, according to the complainants.

When Mehdi Hasan was questioned about the incident, he denied the allegations.

Repeated attempts to contact Atiq for comment were unsuccessful.

However, on social media, he claimed that an organized group was behind the allegations of sexual harassment against him.

Dhaka University Proctor Maksudur Rahman confirmed that a thorough investigation into the allegations was underway and assured that the guilty would be punished accordingly.
