Gordon Ramsay was involved in a bicycle accident this week that left him hospitalized.

The 57-year-old chef and television presenter shared the news on Instagram on Saturday, explaining what had happened and urging his followers to always wear a helmet when cycling.

“Hi guys, it’s Gordon here and I want to give you all a very important message,” he began in a video message. “You know how much I love cycling and triathlon and the Isle of Man etc, but unfortunately this week I had a really bad accident.”

His hands were visibly shaking as he continued, “Honestly, I’m glad to be here. The incredible trauma surgeons, doctors and nurses at the hospital who have taken care of me this week have been amazing, but honestly, you have to wear a helmet.”

Ramsay described helmets as “crucial” and reiterated: “I’m lucky to be standing here.”

“I’m in pain, it’s been a brutal week, but I’m getting through it somehow,” he said, lifting his shirt to reveal a massive bruise covering half of his torso.

The “Kitchen Nightmares” host also shared a before and after photo – the “before” photo shows him in a cycling outfit, standing with his bike, wearing a helmet and sunglasses.

The “after” photo only showed his shirt and helmet, both of which appeared to be completely destroyed.

As a caption to his post, Ramsay wrote: “This week I had a really bad accident while riding my bike in Connecticut. I’m fine and didn’t break any bones or sustain any major injuries, but I’m a little bruised and look like a purple potato.”

He continued, “I am grateful to all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawerence + Memorial Hospital in New London who took care of me and checked me over, but I am most grateful for my helmet that saved my life. Happy Father’s Day and take care, Gx.”
