One arrested after shooting involving deputy sheriff in Crowley

CROWLEY, Louisiana – An arrest has been made in connection with the shooting involving a deputy sheriff in Crowley last week.

On June 3, 2024, investigators with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations were asked by the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office (APSO) to investigate a shooting in Crowley involving a deputy. The investigation led to the arrest of 52-year-old Jacob Richard of Rayne, officials report.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Richard, who was wanted for multiple felony charges, was spotted by two APSO officers on South Avenue H. A brief foot chase ensued as officers attempted to arrest Richard. During the arrest, Richard stabbed both officers with a knife, wounding them, at which point one of the officers fired his service weapon, striking Richard, according to Louisiana State Police.

Richard was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. After his release, he was booked into the Acadia Parish Jail by the APSO on several outstanding warrants. The injured officers were also treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and subsequently released, authorities say.

On June 12, 2024, detectives with the Louisiana State Police arrested Richard on two counts of attempted murder of a police officer. The investigation is ongoing.
