ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Department Closes Clinton Township Facilities, Moves to Houston

A major employer in Hunterdon County will close its doors in the next few years.

ExxonMobil announced the closure of its research and engineering facilities in Clinton Township, located near US-22 and I-78, saying the company is establishing a new cutting-edge technology hub on its Houston campus.

ExxonMobil says the move will affect nearly 600 employees and most of them will be relocated to the Houston area.

“This move will expand our research capabilities and lay the foundation for long-term growth,” Exxon Mobile said in a statement.

Clinton Mayor Brian Mullay said ExxonMobil’s research and engineering facilities have been a part of the Clinton Township community since it opened more than four decades ago, supporting thousands of jobs over the of this period.

“We are incredibly disappointed to learn that ExxonMobil has chosen to close this facility over the next several years,” Mullay said.

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association also released a statement saying the consolidation should serve as a reminder of why New Jersey needs to significantly improve its business climate and be more competitive with other states.

ExxonMobil told News 12 New Jersey it plans to complete a phased relocation by 2028.
