US immigration officials catch fugitive wanted for raping minor in Jamaica | News

STAMFORD, CMC – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Friday that agents of its Division of Enforcement and Removal (ERO) in Boston, Massachusetts, arrested a Jamaican fugitive wanted in Jamaica on charges of rape and sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16.

ICE said deportation officers from ERO Boston’s field office in Hartford, Connecticut, arrested the 59-year-old Jamaican national on May 29 near his residence in Stamford, Connecticut.

“This Jamaican non-citizen fled to the United States to escape some very disturbing charges,” said Todd M. Lyons, ERO Boston Field Office Director. “He posed a significant threat to the people of Connecticut and will now return to Jamaica to face justice.”

“ERO Boston will continue its work and make public safety our highest priority while arresting and removing serious non-citizen offenders from our New England communities,” he added.

ICE said that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBO) authorized the Jamaican national to enter the United States on June 14, 2020, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

He entered the country as a non-immigrant visitor and has permission to stay in the United States for six months, ICE said.

On July 1, 2020, ICE announced that Jamaican authorities had issued an arrest warrant for him for the rape of a child in that country.

ICE said the U.S. State Department revoked the Jamaican citizen’s nonimmigrant visa on July 9, 2020.

“ERO Hartford deportation officers arrested the Jamaican fugitive on May 29 near his residence in Stamford, issued him a summons to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge, and initiated deportation proceedings against him,” ICE said.

“He will remain in ERO custody until the completion of his deportation proceedings,” it said.
