“Emergency situation” in Auburn leads to investigation

Shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday, Auburn Police reported an “emergency situation involving an armed person” on Russell Avenue.

AUBURN, Maine – Multiple agencies are investigating after curfews were imposed in Auburn early Saturday morning due to what police are calling an “emergency situation.”

Shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday, Auburn Police reported on Facebook an “emergency situation involving an armed person” on Russell Avenue in Auburn.

Police urged residents in the area to secure their homes and seek shelter.

Police also said they were aware of reported building fires on Russell Avenue and a power outage in the area, but did not say whether the incidents were related.

At around 5 a.m., Central Maine Power reported 1,685 outages. By noon, there were 273 outages, including 15 in Androscoggin County.

Shannon Moss, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, told NEWS CENTER Maine that the Maine State Police tactical team is assisting Auburn police with the incident.

At around 6 a.m., Auburn Police posted an update on Facebook saying the incident on Russell Avenue had been resolved and the curfew had been lifted.

“There is no danger to the public,” said the police. “The emergency services will remain on site for some time.”

Shortly after 10 a.m., Moss issued a press release stating that the Maine State Police, Auburn Police Department, State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office were investigating the incident.

Moss added that a press conference will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Auburn City Hall to discuss the incident.
