Panama: Yellow alert due to heavy rainfall

The organization’s report states that the provinces of Darien, West Panama, Cocle, Los Santos, Chiriqui, Veraguas and the Embera Wounaan region will continue to be monitored.

According to the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, the deterioration of the weather situation is due to the interaction of several atmospheric systems: low pressure areas, the intertropical convergence zone, the Central American vortex and the passage of tropical wave No. 5, which could cause instability.

In addition, there are warnings of an intensification of southerly winds that could bring moisture over the Pacific coast and thus lead to changes in conditions at sea. There is also a risk of flooding and landslides.

In the meantime, the National Emergency Operations Centre is coordinating with various authorities to continuously monitor and observe vulnerable areas and weather conditions, particularly the Ngäbe Buglé region towards the Pacific and the Eastern Panama region.

SINAPROC recommended that the population in these areas avoid hiking trails, mountains, rivers, streams and lakes. Residents of risk areas were also advised to seek safety and comply with the prevention measures issued by the emergency and security authorities.
