Polish tourist raped in Himachal’s McLeod Ganj, 1 person arrested | Chandigarh News

A 24-year-old man was arrested in Kangra district of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday for allegedly raping a 39-year-old Polish tourist near McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala on Thursday, police said.

Police identified the accused as Kartik Chauhan. The foreigner came to India last month on a tourist visa and arrived in McLeod Ganj two weeks ago, police added.

According to police, Chauhan, a resident of Upper Bhagsu, owns several rooms in McLeod Ganj which he rents out to tourists. He reportedly met the woman in a local shop and promised to help her during her stay in McLeod Ganj.

According to a police source, the woman claimed that the man raped her on Thursday under the pretext of marriage. “The room where the crime took place was examined by a team of forensic experts. In addition, certain samples were taken from the room. The suspect is being interrogated and the Polish embassy will be informed,” the source added.

After the woman filed a complaint with the relevant police station on Friday, a case was registered under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code.

“The victim is a foreigner. She came to India on a tourist visa for leisure activities. We have verified her allegations. Initial investigation has established the crime. The victim’s statement under Section 164 of CrPC has been recorded before a local magistrate. The victim has identified the suspect and it has come to light that they were in touch for the last two weeks. Further investigation is on,” said Shalini Agnihotri, Superintendent of Police (SP), Kangra.

McLeod Ganj is a famous tourist place where Tsuglag Khang, the home of the Dalai Lama, is located. Thousands of foreigners visit McLeod Ganj every year.
