She was 58.

“It was to be expected, but still sad,” Mr Gehrke told FOMO News.

“She was a good person.”

Letourneau was a 34-year-old teacher when she began a sexual relationship with Vili Fualaau, a 12-year-old student in her sixth grade class.

She was sentenced to more than seven years in prison in 1997 and married Mr Fualaau after her release in 2005.

In the 2018 documentary “Mary Kay Letourneau: Autobiography,” Letourneau said she never believed her relationship was illegal.

“I didn’t know it was a law,” she said.

Many are still convinced that she never took responsibility for her actions.

The couple had two daughters together before he filed for separation in 2017. She also had four children from a previous marriage.

Mr Gehrke told CNN that most of Letourneau’s family was with her when she died, including Mr Fualaau.

Letourneau’s lawyer added that she required round-the-clock care in the last month before her death.
