Chicago police are investigating designer Binta Diallo for theft and fraudulent business practices, accusing her of failing to deliver prom dresses to the girls.

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police told the I-Team they are investigating a prom dress designer accused of failing to supply dresses to teenagers.

Dressmaker Binta Diallo is no stranger to the ABC 7 I-Team. As ABC7 reported last year, the designer was accused of delivering incomplete dresses.

Customers told the I-Team that Diallo ruined proms for girls across the city. Mothers and daughters have come forward, and now Chicago police are involved.

“She betrayed us! She betrayed innocent people,” said mother Angelina Alvarado-Scott.

The Chicago mom is furious. Alvarado-Scott said she paid Diallo $1,800 for her daughter’s prom dress, but in the end they got nothing. She said it all started in October of last year when they discovered Diallo’s page on Instagram.

“She makes great clothes. She’s here in Chicago. We always support our locals,” Alvarado-Scott said.

But when it was finally time to pick up the dress for the prom, Diallo was told he wasn’t there.

“The security guard told her that there were other girls trying to pick up their clothes here and that she was no longer in this office,” Alvarado-Scott said. “I almost had a panic attack.”

Alvarado-Scott said Diallo reached out later that day to say she had a new address and her website had crashed, and she needed time to resolve the issue and reschedule the dress’s delivery.

“We asked them if we can go to the CPD office, we can go to Jewel. We can go anywhere in a public place,” Alvarado-Scott said.

Shortly thereafter, Alvarado-Scott said she had been blocked.

“They really broke my heart, and I’m just an 18-year-old who wanted her dress,” said Alvarado-Scott’s daughter Cataline Scott.

Akisha Richard said her daughter was also heartbroken. She said she paid Diallo $1,700, but when it came time to pick up the dress, the designer would not tell her the location.

On the day of the prom, Richard said, Diallo showed up again and gave a pickup address, but never came out again.

“I started crying: ‘Please, Lord, don’t let this happen to me,'” Richard said.

Both mothers filed a complaint with Chicago police, who told the I-Team that Diallo was being investigated for theft and fraud.

ABC7 spoke to Diallo by phone, but she declined to comment. The mothers say they just want a refund now.
