Dead Dad’s Club honors fathers on Father’s Day

THAT’S WHAT IT’S ABOUT. IT’S NEW AT TEN. I THINK WHEN YOUR FATHER DIES, IT’S LIKE SUPERMAN DIES. CHASE LOST HIS FATHER IN 2016. HE’S THE GUY WHO SAYS THINGS AT THE PERCEPTION, AND STARTED THE DEAD DADS CLUB, A FATHER’S DAY EVENT FOR OTHERS WHO HAVE LOST THEIR FATHERS. A WAY FOR PEOPLE TO JUST MEET UP AND FIND CAMARADERY WITH STRANGERS WHO HAVE A COMMON CONNECTION, WHICH IS LOSS, HE ADMITTED. IT’S HARD TO LET GO OF THE PAST, ESPECIALLY WHEN A NATIONAL HOLIDAY BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES. IT’S A REALLY GREAT REMINDER THAT TIME WAITS FOR NO ONE AND, UM, AND WE REALLY NEED TO TELL THE PEOPLE WE LOVE THAT WE LOVE THEM WHILE THEY’RE HERE. ON SUNDAY, HE’S HOSTING AN EVENT AT THE BUNKER CLUB ON NORTHEAST 23RD WHERE ANYONE HAVING A ROUGH TIME ON FATHER’S DAY CAN MEET OTHERS GOING THROUGH SIMILAR FEELINGS. BUT HE SAYS THE DOOR IS OPEN TO ANYONE. MAYBE YOU’RE A FATHER WHO LOST A CHILD. UM, JUST REALLY ANYONE WHO KEEPS STRUGGLING ON FATHER’S DAY, HE SAYS, THERE’S NO SHAME. HE’S BEEN HOSTING THE EVENT SINCE 2017 AND HAS SEEN IT ALL: HUGE, STRONG GUYS CRYING ON MY SHOULDER. AT THE END. EVERYONE LAUGHING AND CRYING. AND CHASE IS LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE. HE WANTS HIS EVENT TO END UP HELPING OTHERS. WHO ARE EXPERIENCING GRIEF ON A MUCH BIGGER SCALE. THE DEAD DADS CLUB MEETS ON SUNDAY FROM NOON TO 4 PM. THERE WILL BE FOOD, BUT THE EVENT IS 21+.

Kerby lost his father in 2016 and being the type of person who likes to talk about things as they are, he started the club for others who have lost their fathers. “A way for people to meet and find some kind of camaraderie with strangers who have a common connection, which is loss,” he says. He acknowledges that it’s hard to let go of the past, especially when a national holiday brings back a lot of memories. “It’s a really big reminder that time waits for no one. And we need to tell the people we love that we love them while they’re here,” Kerby said. On Sunday, he will host the event at the Bunker Club, on the corner of Northwest 23rd Street and Walker Avenue, so anyone going through a hard time on Father’s Day can come and meet others. He said he’s looking to the future and ultimately wants his event to help other people grieving on a much larger scale. “Some kind of fundraiser that might benefit grief counseling for people going through the loss of a child, parent or grandparent,” Kerby said. Sunday’s event will run from noon to 4 p.m., there will be food, but you must be at least 21 to enter the establishment. Kerby lost his father in 2016 and being the kind of guy who likes to talk about true events, he founded the club for others who have lost their father.

“An opportunity for people to meet and develop a kind of camaraderie with strangers who share a common bond, which is loss,” he said.
