Whitley Herald

A Belcourt man was sentenced in North Central District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to domestic violence and aggravated assault.

The charges stem from an incident on October 13, 2023, when 21-year-old Whitley Herald of Belcourt was screaming and throwing objects in an apartment in southeast Minot.

According to an affidavit, Minot police officers were dispatched to the scene. According to officers, Herald “very drunk” and requested to be arrested while placing his hands behind his back. While speaking with the victim, it became clear that there was a domestic dispute. The incident escalated when Herald choked the victim. Herald was arrested and taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation. He was then transported to the Ward County Jail.

Judge Douglas Mattson sentenced Herald to attend an in-person domestic violence course, a drug addiction assessment, one year of supervised probation, 360 days in jail (27 days credited, three days in jail suspended), and $525 in fines/fees. This offense was classified as a misdemeanor.
