FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) – One man was killed and four others were hospitalized after they came under fire in a Fort Lauderdale neighborhood, police said.

Fort Lauderdale police units arrived at the scene of the shooting in the 2300 block of Northwest Eighth Street around 7:10 p.m. Friday.

Upon their arrival, officers found the victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

“I don’t know what happened because it was peaceful. The whole day was peaceful,” said a woman who lives in the neighborhood.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Department paramedics took all five men to Broward Health Medical Center, where one of them was pronounced dead.

According to investigators, another patient is in critical condition, while the other three are stable and expected to survive.

The woman who spoke to 7News said she heard between 30 and 40 shots and it sounded “like a war.”

“And it’s sad, it’s really sad,” she added.

Investigators say it appears to have been a drive-by shooting, but they are exploring all possibilities in their investigation.

“I don’t know what happened because the whole day was peaceful,” said the woman who spoke to 7News. “It seemed like everyone was getting along. Everyone was talking, everyone was chatting, everyone was joking, so I don’t know.”

A business owner who said he owned a club in the area cordoned off with police tape said he could not enter his business.

Police have not released any further details about the victims or possible perpetrators as the investigation is ongoing.
