Wife of fired Astros GM criticizes team for poor start

MLB

The wife of a former Astros general manager isn’t holding back her thoughts on the team’s performance this season.

A day after the Astros’ 5-3 loss to the Giants on Thursday, Gina Luhnow — who is married to former Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow — offered a fiery response to an X fan who asked her, “How did the Astros go from seven straight ALCS appearances to finishing dogs – in the span of a single offseason?

“Simple answer: Jim Crane fired Jeff Luhnow. Karma sucks,” Gina responded Thursday.

Houston, two seasons removed from a World Series victory, started the year with a disappointing 0-4 record and currently sits at 31-38, which is the fourth-worst record in the American League.

“Wow. I didn’t think my comment would be that bad,” Gina wrote on X on Friday. “I want to make it clear that I am in no way ‘celebrating’ the Astros’ current struggles. Jeff and I will always support our boys, our team.

Astros owner Jim Crane purchased the team in 2011 and hired Jeff Luhnow, who led the organization’s rebuild, as general manager.

Luhnow’s arrival set the organization up for success, with the franchise winning its first World Series title in 2017, as well as seven consecutive trips to the ALCS, including four under his leadership.

Crane fired Luhnow and his manager AJ Hinch in 2020 following the Astros’ infamous sign-stealing scandal.

The former executive director filed a $22 million lawsuit against the organization after claiming he had no knowledge of the illegal sign theft and had 22,000 text messages to prove it.

Despite the scandal, Luhnow continued to thrive in the sports industry.

In 2021, he established Blue Crow Sports Group, overseeing soccer clubs across multiple leagues.

“I was already thinking about football,” Luhnow told The Athletic in 2022. “I had spent, you know, 16 years in baseball. I really enjoyed that. Football is the place for me at the moment.

Luhnow was widely recognized as the mastermind behind the Astros’ most successful era in franchise history, and his wife isn’t afraid to make sure people remember that.

The Luhnows have been married since 2012, a year after getting the Astros job.
