Final Fantasy 14 Suffers From Worldwide DDoS Attack, Square Enix Is “Investigating The Attack And Taking Countermeasures”

Final Fantasy 14 has been subjected to a series of DDoS attacks in recent days, resulting in players lagging, being randomly logged out, and even leaving some data centers inaccessible for hours.

The attacks began on Monday, May 6, when most of the problems occurred for players. While North American and European servers appeared to be hit hardest by the issues, Japanese and Oceanic servers were also affected. The first round of attacks lasted over 24 hours, from around 1:00 p.m. GMT on Monday to 2:30 p.m. GMT on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for fishermen, gardeners and robbers, the matter is not over yet. A second wave hit the game at around 11pm GMT yesterday. This issue is ongoing and this time mainly affects European, North American and Oceanic data centers. In a post on the Lodestone, Square Enix said it was “investigating the attack and taking countermeasures,” adding that “additional information will be provided as the situation develops.”

It’s a huge, unfortunate problem for the game, especially as hype builds around the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. Many people, like me, are probably diving back into work to clean up missed quests and class levels in preparation, which is pretty difficult if you’re having trouble logging into the game. The attacks also occurred in the final days of the Final Fantasy 16 collaboration event, which ends later today. Luckily, I was able to jump in and claim my rewards yesterday during a DDoS-free hour, but those on a little shorter notice might find themselves missing out.

Some found the humor in things on Twitter, with one tweet saying the attacks were merely an early arrival of the “(Dawntrail) login experience.” Another was (understandably) more concerned that the attacks would cause them to miss the window to catch a particular fish. tweet: “Whoever is causing the DDoS attacks in ffxiv, please stop… Bro, a fish window is popping up and I don’t want to wait six days for the next window of that particular fish if I don’t catch it because my connection was lost. “ As someone who didn’t have the mental strength to become a full-time fisherman, I feel their pain.

To make matters worse, European data center Chaos experienced its own difficulties during the attacks. Server equipment issues, unrelated to the DDoS shenanigans, caused people to struggle to log in for 12 hours on Tuesday, May 7th. At least there were some nice people out there offering water plants to their Chaos brethren.

I did a little diving into the European data center Light myself this morning and so far everything seems to be fine. That could change as the day goes on, or perhaps Square Enix finally has things under control. Hopefully there won’t be more turmoil in the coming days – I still have a few Yokai FATEs to work on.
