Gurnee police said the near drowning of a five-year-old child in a local apartment was an unfortunate accident and no charges will be filed.

Gurnee police spokeswoman Shawn Gaylor said in an emailed statement Friday that police were investigating the incident, which occurred around 5 p.m. Thursday, and that no charges would be filed.

“Our thoughts are with the child and his family during this difficult time,” Gaylor said.

The 5-year-old child was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition after nearly drowning in an outdoor pool at an apartment complex in Gurnee on Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.

Gurnee Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a child near drowning at Northlake Farms Apartments, 6700 Derby Drive in Gurnee at 4:59 p.m. Thursday.

According to fire department radio traffic, the child was reportedly found in the pool and CPR was performed before emergency responders arrived.

Gurnee Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Heraver told Lake & McHenry County Scanner on Thursday that firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene within three minutes and found the child – who he said is 5 years old – outside the pool.

Paramedics immediately began life-saving measures and took the child to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in serious condition, Heraver said.

The child’s condition is currently unknown.
