The Juneteenth Fest on Avenida Houston and Discovery Green will take place on Saturday, June 16 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

HOUSTON — The celebration of freedom continues in Houston this weekend with several Juneteenth events.

Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, commemorates the historic day of June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston learned they were free two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

It has been celebrated in Texas for decades, and in 2021 it became a federal holiday.
