Below is a press release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office:

SILESIA, Montana – On June 12, 2024, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a residence in northern Silesia to check on the welfare of the residents.

The welfare check was requested by friends who were unable to contact the residents after receiving a disturbing email from the man living in the residence.

When officers arrived, they found an adult woman and an adult man inside the home, both dead from gunshot wounds.

After examining the crime scene on Thursday and completing autopsies on both subjects on Friday, investigators were able to determine that 70-year-old Jerry Leggate first shot his wife, 62-year-old Laura Leggate, before shooting himself on Friday afternoon, June 7.

The Montana Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations assisted in the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
