Dau Mabil's wife on rumors in death investigation

Dau Mabil’s wife, accompanied by her family, held a press conference on Friday where she reiterated her claim that she had no involvement in her husband’s disappearance and death.

Karissa Bowley, Dau’s wife, said the event on private property near Belhaven University was held in response to the ongoing investigation and spread of rumors surrounding Dau’s death.

“From the beginning, we have all called for a thorough, competent and timely investigation into what happened, and we continue to call for that today,” Bowley said. “I feel the loss of Dau in my life, in my heart, deeply. So I have great faith in our community to continue to push for justice for Dau, for answers and for support.”

During a court hearing on April 30, court documents revealed new details describing a strained relationship between Mabil and Bowley.

According to court documents, text messages were sent in the days before Mabil’s disappearance expressing Bowley’s concerns about Mabil’s drinking and alleged verbal and physical abuse. According to court documents, in a March 22 text message sent three days before his disappearance, Mabil considered leaving Bowley.

These messages became public more than a month after Mabil disappeared in the Belhaven area in late March and weeks after his body was recovered from the Pearl River in Lawrence County on April 13.

Several questions from Lisa Ross, an attorney for Bul Mabil, Dau’s brother, centered on whether Bowley had anything to do with Dau’s disappearance. Bowley testified for nearly two hours.

The questioning ended with Paloma Wu, who is representing Bowley, asking Bowley if she killed Mabil or knew who did. In the courtroom, Bowley said no. And at the press conference on Friday, Bowley still said no.

Spencer Bowley, Karissa’s eldest brother, said allegations that Bowley was involved in Dau’s death or that the Bowley family played a role in Dau’s death were “patently false.”

What is the status of Dau Mabil’s autopsy?

On May 2, Hinds County Chancery Court Judge Dewayne Thomas issued two orders regarding Dau Mabil’s remains, one of which states that an independent autopsy of Dau’s remains will be conducted at the “direction and expense” of Bul Mabil.

According to court documents, the State Crime Lab will retain the body until the investigation and independent autopsy are completed. Both parties will be notified once the investigation is complete.

Thomas said the autopsy results would be made available to the public once Karissa Bowley receives them.

Spencer Bowley told reporters he confirmed with a Capitol Police representative on Friday that authorities are still waiting for the “full autopsy report.” Spencer said he believes the toxicology report is still being processed and it “could take a long time to get it done.”

Spencer said the family has also contacted Dau’s brother Bul Mabil and Bul’s lawyer to initiate the second autopsy.

“We’ve heard from them that they have someone in mind or have already selected someone to do the autopsy. We’ve asked them who that is so we can start coordinating logistics with that person to try to get the second autopsy done as quickly as possible. But they haven’t told us who that person actually is, so we haven’t really been able to confirm if they qualify yet,” Spencer said.

What happened after Dau Mabil disappeared?

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Ryan Everett, an initial autopsy found that no crime was committed in Dau’s death.

But Bul Mabil, Dau’s brother, rejected these findings and compared Dau’s death to the murder of Emmett Till in 1955.

Bul, attorney Lisa Ross and Dau’s foster mother Valeena Greer criticized the investigation conducted by Capitol Police as “inadequate” and asked Jackson police for assistance, according to previous reports in the Clarion Ledger.

At Friday’s press conference, Bowley expressed her “frustration” over the authorities’ “inability to cooperate.”

“The case was claimed equally by the Capitol Police and the JPD, but they refused to pretend they were working on the same case. They were working on two different cases, which frustrated us. We were frustrated by the slowness and the kind of composure they were showing about the whole situation,” Bowley said.

“We were concerned that if it wasn’t my baby but I who went missing, how quickly people and the police would drop everything to find me,” Bowley said.
