Security alert warns travelers of kidnappings in Reynosa

The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros issued a security alert on Friday warning the public about organized kidnappings in Reynosa.

The kidnappings occurred on intercity buses departing from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, the alert said.

“These kidnappings appear to specifically target passengers with ties to the United States, including U.S. citizens and residents,” the warning states. “The kidnappers typically demand a ransom of several thousand dollars for each victim.”

Tamaulipas remains under a Level 4 travel advisory from the U.S. State Department, warning against travel due to the threat of crime and kidnapping in the region.

The warning states that people should avoid bus travel in or through Tamaulipas. The public is urged to be aware of their surroundings and to inform friends and family about their safety.
