Two men shot dead at car meet in Accokeek, Maryland.

Two men were found shot to death at a car meet in Accokeek, Maryland, on Thursday night, Prince George’s County police said.

Officers responded to a reported shooting in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 7000 block of Berry Road around 11:45 p.m., police said. Two Maryland men — Sheldon Proctor, 48, of Waldorf and Patrick Savoy, 55, of Charlotte Hall — were pronounced dead at the scene. A third man was shot and wounded and took himself to a hospital, police said. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Efforts to reach the victims’ families were unsuccessful Friday, but a woman who identified herself as Proctor’s sister told Fox 5 DC that Proctor used a scooter for health reasons and was the “nicest guy” with the “prettiest smile.”

“He loved the world, he loved all people,” she said.

Thursday’s triple shooting is the second fatal incident at a car meet in Prince George’s County in recent weeks. On May 19, 26-year-old John Phipps was the unintended target of a shooting that was sparked by a driver spinning his car’s tires too closely in a District Heights parking lot, according to police charging documents.

Although police called the District Heights event an “illegal event that involved reckless endangerment with vehicles, stolen cars, firearms and assault,” the Accokeek car meet was not such a spontaneous affair, according to participants.

The car show is one of several regularly scheduled gatherings during the week in Prince George’s County, said Frankie Ibey, 49, a car enthusiast who attended the car meet in Accokeek.

Ibey has known the Accokeek meetup for more than a decade and says it draws an older crowd of regulars who arrive around 6 p.m. and leave around 9 p.m. Drivers line up their well-maintained cars in rows in the parking lot, with the hoods up as people look around. Many people bring lawn chairs to sit on and pass the time with friends and talk about their shared love of cars, Ibey says.

Ibey considered going on Thursday, but decided against it because his knee was bothering him and he didn’t want to stay out too long. On Friday morning, he called his friends to make sure they were there.

“It pains me that people bring weapons,” Ibey said. “You have to know that more people will get hurt than you actually intended.”

Police are investigating the motive and are working to identify one or more shooters.
