Hoboken police warn of cell phone pickpocketing, also known as “Apple Picking” – NBC New York

Hoboken police are warning residents about an increase in cell phone thefts, also known as “apple picking,” police said.

Police have received more than two dozen reports of cellphone thefts and pickpocketing in Hoboken this year alone, police said. Investigators said the thefts often occur in crowded bars and restaurants when customers leave their phones unattended or easily accessible.

Hoboken police recommend not leaving your phone unattended or in your back pocket. Police also advise not keeping cash, credit cards or ID cards in your phone case.

The police ask you to report your phone immediately if it is stolen.
