Police also arrested a teenager and took into custody three minor boys who allegedly attacked Samir and two others at Parihar Chowk in Aundh around 5.15 am on Thursday.

The arrested accused was identified as Jay Sunil Ghengat (19), a resident of Kasturba Gandhi Vasahat in Aundh. He was produced before a district court in Pune on Friday.

Prosecution counsel VC Muralikar said his custodial interrogation was necessary to trace two other youths allegedly involved in the crime and to recover the weapon and vehicles used in committing the offence.

The police also told the court that the accused had consumed alcohol during the crime. The police said an investigation was underway to find out where they had bought the alcohol.

First Class Magistrate AS Shinde remanded Ghengat in custody till June 18. In the meantime, the three minors detained in the case have been shifted to an observation home on the orders of the Juvenile Justice Authority, police said.

Police Inspector Yuvraj Nandre said one of the minor accused had also been arrested for attempted murder in the past. Police prima facie suspect that the accused wanted money to buy liquor and therefore attacked the victims. Investigations are on to find out if they have committed similar offences in the past.

According to sources, the police have now submitted a request to the JJB to try one of the minors accused in the case as an adult.

Police said the victim Samir was on a morning walk. At around 5.15 pm, he was intercepted by the accused near the tennis court in Parihar Chowk. They allegedly demanded money from him. When he refused, they allegedly attacked him and hit him on the head with a hard object, leaving him seriously injured. Police said he was initially admitted to Medipoint Hospital in Aundh and later shifted to Jupiter Hospital. However, he did not recover and was declared dead on Friday evening, police said.

Dr. Rajendra Patankar, CEO of Jupiter Hospital, said Samir was declared brain dead on Friday morning. “His family took the remarkable decision to donate his organs,” Patankar said.

According to reports, Samir had retired from Tata Motors Company. His liver and eyes were donated.

Meanwhile, police said the assailants also attacked another person, cyclist Shreyas Satish Shetty (30), a resident of Ashwini Society in Khadki, who was riding through Aundh area.

The accused also allegedly tried to snatch money from his pocket. When he resisted, one of them attacked Shetty with an iron rod. Shetty’s hand was injured in the incident. He later lodged a complaint under sections 397, 307 and 341 of the Indian Penal Code at Chaturshringi police station.

The attackers also attacked Ramsobitkumar Mandal (39) with an iron rod to steal money. Mandal, a security guard at a construction site in the Parihar Chowk area, was also injured and had to be treated in a hospital.

During investigation, police arrested Ghengat and nabbed three minors. Police Inspector Yuvraj Nandre said one of the minor accused was also arrested for attempt to murder in the past.

At first glance, the police suspect that the accused wanted money to buy more alcohol and therefore attacked the victims. They are investigating whether they have committed similar crimes in the past.

Meanwhile, after receiving information about Samir’s death from the hospital, police have initiated proceedings under sections 302 (murder) and 396 (robbery cum murder) of the IPC, a senior police official said.
