The Nissan GT-R is dead

These two special variants are the last R35s for the North American market.

After 17 years, the R35 Nissan GT-R is being discontinued. Nissan announced on Friday that GT-R production for the North American market will end in October. Two special models, the Skyline and Takumi Edition, are intended to celebrate the world’s best performance car.

We’ve contacted Nissan to confirm whether GT-R production for other markets will continue beyond October, and we’ll let you know if we get a response. But even if GT-R production does continue beyond October, it certainly won’t be for very long.

The Skyline Edition is based on the base “Premium” model and is available exclusively in Bayside Blue with a blue interior. It costs $132,985. The Takumi Edition is a slightly revised version of the 2024 GT-R T-Spec, painted exclusively in Midnight Purple and equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes, gold RAYS forged wheels and wider front fenders. There is a gold VIN plate in the engine bay and red lettering on the exterior badges in honor of the Takumi, the master craftsmen who make the GT-R. It costs $152,985.

As always, both are equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine with twin turbochargers and 565 hp, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. Information on the production numbers of these limited models is not yet available.

When the GT-R was launched in 2007, it shocked the performance car world and punched above its weight class, reshaping the world in its image and forcing many other automakers to work hard to beat the killer Nissan. But in the years since, Nissan has struggled, and while performance cars have evolved, the GT-R has only received iterative updates and two facelifts in its 17 years.

In a press release, Nissan said: “While the R35 GT-R leaves an unforgettable legacy, Nissan is now hyper-focused on the future and the next era of exciting innovation in performance.” Nissan has unveiled an electric GT-R concept, the Hyper Force, but it may not arrive until the end of the decade.
