Mold infestation leads to recall of sunscreen basics – WFTV

Las Vegas-based skin care company Suntegrity Skincare is recalling several batches of its sunscreen foundation after mold was found in some tubes.

The company is recalling nine lots of its Suntegrity Impeccable Skin Sunscreen Foundation in multiple shades. The tubes were sold in 2-ounce orange tubes through the company’s website, SuntegritySkincare.com, on Amazon and through other retailers nationwide, according to the FDA.

According to company representatives, the following batch numbers are being recalled:

  • Lot No. 115BU, expiration date 25.6., in leather
  • Lot No. 117BU, with expiration date 25.10., in leather
  • Lot No. 107IV, with expiration date 25.4., in ivory
  • Lot No. 107NU, expiration date 25.6., in Nude
  • Lot No. 109NU, with expiration date 25.10., in Nude
  • Lot No. 113SA, expiration date 25.6., in sand
  • Lot No. 114SA, with expiration date 25.10., in sand
  • Lot No. 106BR, with expiration date 25.4., in bronze
  • Lot No. 101MO, with expiration date 25.5., in mocha

The numbers are located on the back of the tubes on the top crimp line where they are sealed.

Suntegrity said it found some of the tubes in batch 115BU were contaminated with the common mold Aspergillus sydowii after a customer reported a “strong odor” from the product. Suntegrity said the mold emerged after initial testing and no other batches were found to be contaminated.

The company nevertheless stated: “Out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to voluntarily recall additional batches to ensure the safety of our customers” while the incident is investigated.

“If you have used Impeccable Skin and the product did not have an unusual odor, the product was probably not problematic at the time of use, as ALL batches passed microbiological testing when they were released to the market,” Suntegrity said. “We recently tested tubes from different batches of Impeccable Skin (with and without an unpleasant odor) and the problem only seems to occur with strong odors.”

The recalled sunscreen primers were manufactured between September 2023 and March 2024. Authorities urged owners of these products to stop using them immediately.

“A topical product contaminated with Aspergillus Sydowii could potentially cause an allergic skin reaction that generally resolves after cleansing the skin and discontinuing use of the product,” Suntegrity said.

“In addition, when used on open wounds or sunburned skin, a primary fungal infection of the skin may occur. If the product comes into direct contact with the eye, an eye infection may occur. A primary skin infection caused by Aspergillus species in an immunocompromised person should be treated medically.”

According to official information, no adverse incidents have been reported in connection with the foundations.

If you purchased the sunscreen primer through the company’s website or through Amazon, you can email Suntegrity at [email protected] to request a refund, credit or exchange. The company asked consumers to email their order numbers, product lot numbers and names, and said they will then need to provide proof that they discarded the tubes.

If you purchased the product from a retailer, you can contact Suntegrity at [email protected] for an exchange including a free gift. If you would rather receive a store credit, you can contact the retailer, Suntegrity said. Proof of product disposal will also be required.
