Fourth earthquake shakes part of metro Atlanta near Lake Lanier

BUFORD, Ga. — Within days, a fourth earthquake shook part of Gwinnett County.

The magnitude 2.2 earthquake occurred around 3:15 a.m. Thursday northwest of Buford and near southern Lake Lanier, according to data from the United States Geological Survey. Its depth was 8.9 kilometers.

As of Friday morning, four people from Cumming and six people from Buford reported feeling the earthquake. Lake Lanier includes Cumming, Buford and Gainesville.

The area northwest of Buford has seen other earthquakes over the past week. Only on Sunday, the region was shaken by a magnitude 2.3 earthquake.

Then, before that, on June 6, the region experienced a magnitude 2.5 earthquake, according to the data. An area 3 kilometers north of Sugar Hill was hit by a 2.1 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

It has not been revealed what makes this area attractive for recent earthquakes.

Gwinnett County police told Patch on Monday that no injuries had been reported at that time.
