Beachgoer fatally hit by police car on South Carolina beach, highway patrol reports

Authorities say a beachgoer died after being hit by a police car on a South Carolina beach

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – A beachgoer died after being struck by a police car on a South Carolina beach, authorities said.

Lance Cpl. Lena Butler of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said a Horry County police cruiser was driving toward the beach from Nash Street in the Myrtle Beach area shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday when the person was struck, news outlets reported. The injured person was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center and later died, Butler said.

Images from the scene show people crowding around the police car on the beach. Dennis Miller told WMBF-TV that passersby tried to help the person trapped under the car and did their best to lift him up.

The Horry County coroner’s office could not immediately identify the deceased person. County police did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press.
