What Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is doing – and not doing – to avoid a budget crisis

Mayor Brown

Mayor Byron Brown met with the Buffalo News editorial board Wednesday to discuss the city’s budget deficit. “Yes, we have some storm clouds on the horizon, financially, but I believe they can be overcome, and I believe they will be,” he said.

What Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is doing – and not doing – to avoid a budget crisis

A financial crisis is looming for the city of Buffalo, the city comptroller, Common Council members and the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority are all warning.

In less than 12 months, the city will face a budget deficit of at least $41 million, but it could exceed $55 million.

Mayor Byron W. Brown admits it’s inevitable that the city — which raised its taxes by 7.5 percent this year — will have to raise property taxes again starting next year.

But Brown says he’s not willing to lay off city workers or cut services to residents.

And he says his administration will continue to hire new workers to fill vacancies on its workforce.
