Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that officers were involved in a chase around 1:45 a.m. when the state police patrol car collided with a pickup truck on Columbus Boulevard near the Race Street Pier.

“A police officer was coming at us at 65 to 75 miles an hour – they were chasing someone,” said security officer Rashid Izzard, who witnessed the accident. “The truck turned off the road here and the police officer ran right into it – the truck rolled over. The police officer ran right into the pole … it’s bad.”

The driver of the pickup truck, who was not involved in the chase, died, investigators said.

A witness video showed one police officer limping out of the patrol car and a second getting out of the vehicle. It was initially unclear how badly the police officers were injured.

It was unclear whether there was anyone else in the truck.

Officers were eventually able to stop the pursued car near the corner of 2nd Street and Race Street, said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Two people in the car were arrested, Philadelphia police said. It is unclear what charges they face.

A section of Columbus Boulevard was closed for hours while police investigated the fatal accident.
