Gurmeet Ram Rahim requests 21 days probation

What’s the matter

Rape convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim has filed a fresh petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking 21-day parole.

In his petition, Ram Rahim stated that he had to attend a programme organised by Dera Sacha Sauda, of which he is the head.

His latest parole application came after he was granted 50 days of probation in January, his seventh parole in just 10 months.

Supreme Court responds to Ram Rahim’s parole application

After receiving the petition, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Haryana government and the Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) asking them to respond by July 2.

The court had previously questioned the frequent parole measures against Ram Rahim, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for the rape of two female followers.

It ordered that all future parole applications by Ram Rahim must first be approved by it.

Court seeks information on probation patterns

The decision came after the SGPC filed a petition against the frequent release of the controversial preacher.

In addition, the Supreme Court sought information on how many prisoners were granted release in a similar manner to Ram Rahim.

In the last four years, Ram Rahim has been released on parole nine times, seven of which were within a ten-month period.

In 2023 alone, he was released on parole three times.

Ram Rahim and four others acquitted in 2002 murder case

In addition to his rape conviction, Ram Rahim was found guilty in 2019 of the murder of a journalist over 16 years ago.

In 2021, he was convicted again along with four others for conspiring to murder Dera manager Ranjit Singh in 2002.

However, in May they were acquitted in the murder trial.

Singh was suspected of murder because he was allegedly involved in circulating a letter describing how women were sexually exploited at the Dera headquarters.
