Underperforming Dunwoody Walmart Supercenter to close July 12

The Dunwoody Walmart Supercenter will close its doors in July due to underperformance, according to an announcement made by the company Thursday.

“This decision was not taken lightly and was only made after a careful and thoughtful review process,” Walmart said in a statement. “We have nearly 5,000 stores in the United States and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations. Even though our underlying business is strong, this store has not performed as well as we hoped.

The store and its pharmacy department, located at 4725 Ashford Dunwoody Rd., will cease operations July 12, according to the announcement. More than 300 associates work at the Dunwoody location.

“All store associates are eligible to transfer and will be paid through September 20. After that date, if not transferred, eligible associates will receive severance pay,” the release said.

The closing of the Dunwoody store is joined by another location in Marietta. The company’s statement said no further closures are planned in the area for the foreseeable future.

While some are celebrating the closure and already offering suggestions on social media for what could fill that space (pickleball facility, Wegman’s and perennial favorite, Trader Joe’s), Walmart fans say they loved the store for its most advantageous offers.

“The prices on everything were better than any other store,” said Dunwoody resident Shelly Jacobs. “I was just here today to pick up a shirt for my son.”

Christina Kramer, a longtime teacher, said she loves taking advantage of Walmart’s back-to-school sales.

“I always spent a lot of money to stock up for the year because the prices were so low,” Kramer said. “Prices were much cheaper than Target.”

Whether mourning or celebrating the news, most people agreed on one thing: Walmart’s in-store service was still, in their opinion, terrible.

“It’s sad that the store is closing because you can get pretty much everything there, but I’m always afraid to check or find out if I really need help finding something,” Jonathan said Peters. “Forget it if you have a question.” But I will say that curbside pickup has always been efficient and quick.

Walmart’s announcement says there are nine other stores within a 15-mile radius of Dunwoody. It appears the closest location is in Chamblee, 4.7 miles from the Dunwoody store.
