At least one person injured in Long Beach shooting after huge crowd gathered on beach. Here’s what we know.

LONG BEACH, NY – Police are investigating a shooting near a Long Island Rail Road station in Long Beach.

At least one person was injured. Police say he was conscious when he was taken away from the scene. The victim is being treated at a local hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown.

According to police, two people were arrested.

Apparently a brawl on the Long Beach boardwalk ended in a shooting

The incident began on Thursday around 6 p.m.

According to Nassau County police, about 2,000 young adults gathered on the boardwalk.

“It appears to have been a social media event, perhaps Senior Cut Day. There were several schools on the beach spending time together, and there were some altercations within that group,” said Richard DePalma, acting Long Beach police chief.

Long Beach police called county police and asked for help in dispersing the crowd.

According to police, several shots were fired near the Long Beach LIRR station around 7 p.m. as the group was being dispersed.

“All we see is the cops coming down the block at full speed. And all you hear is the first shot – boom. Then you hear seven more go off. Boom, boom, boom,” said one witness.

“There was just a fight. A fight, like always. And then they started fighting, and then they started shooting. But that’s all I remember. I started running,” said another witness.

Long Beach Police are leading the investigation with assistance from Nassau County Police and MTA Police.

LIRR service disrupted by police investigation

During the police investigation, LIRR service between Long Beach and Island Park was partially suspended.

Service was restored late Thursday evening.

The latest service updates are available on the MTA website.
