Dunwoody and Marietta locations are latest affected

Nearly 400 Walmart employees will be affected by store closures in metro Atlanta next month. Officials announced Thursday that the Ashford Dunwoody Road Supermarket in Dunwoody and the Roswell Road Neighborhood Market in Marietta will permanently close their doors on July 12.

“This decision was not taken lightly and was only made after a careful and thoughtful review process,” the company said. “We have nearly 5,000 stores in the United States and unfortunately, some are not meeting our financial expectations. Even though our underlying business is strong, this store has not performed as well as we hoped.

Walmart announced that the hundreds of employees affected by the closures will be paid through September 20 and can be transferred to other locations. Those who are not transferred will be offered severance pay. Pharmacy staff will also work with customers to have prescriptions transferred to other locations.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Dunwoody, Georgia and Marietta, Georgia stores,” spokesperson Alicia Anger said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to serve them at one of nine other area locations, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business.”

This announcement comes less than two months after Walmart announced its health centers would close nationwide. Of the 51 centers affected in five states, 17 of them were in Georgia.

Five years after unveiling the centers, the retail chain said “there is no sustainable business model for us to continue” Walmart Health or Walmart Health Virtual Care.

The shopping giant that employs 1.6 million Americans is also cutting hundreds of jobs at companies across the country, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. Workers based in Walmart’s smaller offices in Atlanta, Dallas and Toronto were also asked to relocate.
