Two people arrested after several police chases

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Two people were arrested early Thursday morning after numerous police chases this week, Monona police report.

On June 10, police said, an MOPD officer was observing traffic on Highway 51 near Broadway when he noticed a vehicle without a license plate.

When the officer drove behind the suspect driver, the speed of the vehicle was between 70 and 120 km/h.

After the driver made several unnecessary lane changes, according to police, the MOPD officer attempted to pull him over.

Initially, the driver actually pulled over and stopped in the flexible lane on Highway 12. According to police, the driver sped away as the officer approached the vehicle.

This led to a pursuit, but the officer ended it on Moorland Road from Rimrock and Beltline.

A passerby pointed an officer searching for the suspect vehicle to a large apartment complex in the 1100 block of Moorland Road.

The officer found the car unoccupied, reports the MOPD.

According to police, additional forces were called to the scene, including a drone pilot from another police station.

As the drone flew through the air, police said, the operator noticed a vehicle enter the complex and pick up several people who were nearby.

Another officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the pursuit was called off, according to police. The pursuit allowed police to obtain more information about the vehicle and the people associated with it.

During the investigation, MOPD learned that the Chevrolet SUV used to pick up the individuals at the apartment complex had been involved in dangerous reckless driving and multiple hit-and-run accidents in Madison.

In the early morning hours of June 13, MOPD officers located the same Chevrolet Captiva involved in the first chase on South Towne Drive in the City of Monona. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop, resulting in a chase.

Another MODP officer assisting in the pursuit successfully deployed a tire deflation device on Rimrock Road at Moorland Road.

According to police, the driver then turned onto Dunwoody Drive and all passengers ran out of the vehicle.

MOPD officers set up a perimeter and searched the area with sniffer dogs and drone units.

Police later found two suspects hiding in the area.

According to police, one of the suspects admitted to being in the vehicle and fleeing from officers.

According to police, the other suspect claimed he was looking for a house party and decided to hide from authorities. MOPD says the suspect also had a black ski mask on him.

Evidence found at the scene suggested both suspects were linked to the vehicle, MOPD reported.

According to police, one of the suspects had the car keys with him. A small amount of marijuana was also found at the crime scene.

A 22-year-old Madison resident was arrested and charged with resisting/obstructing a peace officer. Police say he has a prior criminal record for offenses including fleeing from a felony.

A 22-year-old Middleton resident was also taken into custody and is charged with resisting/obstructing a police officer. MOPD says the Middleton resident was out on bail at the time of the incident, awaiting trial on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Police are continuing to investigate a suspect in connection with the June 10 chase.
