Police say third man arrested in connection with fatal shooting in pickup truck in Denton

Authorities arrested a third person on Thursday following a shooting in Denton last month that left one man dead and another injured, police said.

According to Denton police, officers were called to several calls about shots fired from an apartment complex in the 3200 block of West Windsor Drive around midnight on May 25.

Officers found two men shot in a truck, police said.

Investigators believe a man, whose name was not released by authorities, was in a pickup truck parked in the area when three men “dragged” him from the vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

One of the men, identified by police as 25-year-old River Williams, got into the passenger side of the truck.

The person who was forced out of the vehicle got back into his car and tried to drive away with Williams, who was still carrying a gun, police said.

During a “struggle” for the gun, Williams was fatally shot, police said. The driver was also shot, but his injuries were “not life-threatening,” police said.

The two others who were with Williams at the time were identified by authorities as Riley Clowers, 24, and Zachary Lowe, 34, police said. Clowers was arrested on May 25 and Lowe on Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting.

In a news release Thursday, Denton police said investigators believe another person, 31-year-old Daniel Butureza of Newark, “assisted in the aggravated assault by preventing the pickup truck from escaping.” He was arrested Thursday in Haslet.

“Because Williams died while committing aggravated assault, arrest warrants for murder have been obtained for Butureza, Lowe and Clowers,” the Denton police press release said.

Bail for Lowe was set at $250,000 and for Clowers at $100,000, online records show. Both men were being held in the Denton County Jail.

Butureza’s bail had not been set as of Thursday evening, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the shooting.
